All kinds of goodness this week. I talk about the Boris Karloff zombie movie Voodoo Island (1957), and 3 new releases that Arrow Video sent me: The Horde (2009), Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985). I also recommend the movie It’s Alive (1974) on Netflix Instant Watch.
Two beer reviews! NoCal Mike and Brian in Colorado tell you about some great beers.
My original song is titled “Under.”
Stuff I talk about:
- Eric S. Brown’s upcoming Season of Death
- “How to Make a Zombie, Haiti-Style” (thanks to Victor)

Great podcast, yet again. And, since you mentioned Tarantino and how you’re kind of tired of his focus on dialog, Kill Bill vol.1 and 2 would probably be great movies to check out. It seems that Kill Bill was an exercise in story telling without an abundance of, or reliance on, dialog. Outside of the very last scene of .vol 2, it’s pretty much a straight action/martial arts film with heaps of brutal gore.
I think Tarantino was trying to prove that he could make great films without the quick pithy, campy dialogs and monologues carrying the story and I think he succeeded. I’d recommend renting both and watching them over a weekend as they were intended to be one movie.
Thanks Victor!
The sad part is that I own them both on DVD, and have never put them in. I got caught up in all this zombie nonsense.
See, them fucking zombies ruin everything. In a semi-quasi-related note, I’ve had a copy of Le Horde for nearly a month and your review was the kick in the ass I needed to actually sit down and watch it. That’ll be my hungover Saturday morning now. I love zombies, but anything with “French: as the titular prefix leaves me a bit apprehensive….which is silly since High Tension and Martyrs are on my favorites list.
I’m back, sorry, I haven’t been feeling so good. Sure is good to hear your podcast again though.
Damn, you’ve been making a movie? I’m never in the loop.
I also have La Horde. Damn, i really need to watch this. What the hell kind of zombie fan am I?!
La Horde is awesome! Misfitboy watch it today, or your losing zombie cred!
finished “la horde” i loved this film, best part about it was the fast paced that keeps you on the edge of your seat. the acting was amazing, the entire film was just impending doom! im still kicking myself for letting this one sit on the shelf for so long! halloween rotation? yes, a must! great call on this one Corey & Flopo!
Ok now i gotta see la Horde
